New Actors Workshop: Getting Started in Film, TV, and Commercials
What you need to know to get started acting in film, television, and commercials!
In this workshop we will discuss what every new actor needs to know about getting started in film, television, and commercials. What professional training, and materials you need, what you need to know about an agent or management representation and what happens at a casting call. We will walk you through the process from submission to booking work, how to get paid and how to avoid scams. All participants will tape an on camera “slate” and receive this video after the class.
WHAT WE WILL DISCUSS:
- GETTING STARTED (What you need – Headshots, resume, demo reel, etc.)
- HOW TO FIND WORK (Actors Access, etc)
- THE CASTING PROCESS (Submissions, auditioning, callbacks, etc.)
- TALENT AGENCY REPRESENTATION (Agent, manager basics, etc.)
- SLATE TAPE
This workshop will take approximately 4 hours. There will be a 20 minute snack and bathroom break.
MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:
Vanessa Neff
In just her first few years in the industry, Vanessa has been cast in numerous films and television commercials, including Reeds Jewelers, medical and NC Education Lottery. She has appeared in magazines such as Triangle Style and Cary Lifestyle. Her credits include online representations for residential and retirement communities, healthcare, diagnostic and pharmaceutical. Vanessa models for local boutiques in Raleigh and Durham utilizing live, print and social media. She is also part of an independent media group that creates short films and gives the members opportunities to try different roles, such as writing, directing, filming, editing and of course, acting. Vanessa was cast in 2 feature films in 2020 that were shot in the Charlotte area and is scheduled to shoot a lead in another feature film beginning November, 2022.
Janice Lauren Baker
After acting as a child on stage and commercials as a child and young adult, Janice returned to acting professionally after a 22-year career as a practicing veterinarian and officer in the US Army. Her credits include commercials for a major grocery store chain, national auto parts chain, office tech company, and others. She appeared in the award- winning comedy film Thumb War! and multiple episodes of the long-running true crime show Snapped on the Oxygen Channel. Janice recently wrote, directed and acted in the short film Interview With Ian which won the award for Best Short Film and Best Detective Film at the Raleigh Film and Arts Festival, and Oniros Film Awards in New York, respectively.
